Chapter 9

She listened to Nate talking about Sophie and her World War II stories, how she loved the New York sports teams, and cheese Danish. She was devoted to all her corgis, and ever since she was young, there had been one in her life.

While he talked, he seemed to get lighter, as if celebrating her life bolstered him. It was incongruous, this beautiful spring day and death. But Sophie had lived a wonderful and prosperous life. The funeral passed in a blur, because Pru focused more on Nate than the people who spoke so sweetly and highly of Sophie.

By the time they reached the grave site, the sun was warm, the scent of pine and damp earth mixing with the fragrances from the wreaths and flowers. She and Nate stood side by side, his arms full of sunflowers, Sophie’s favorite, and, coincidentally, Pru’s as well.

They were sunny and beautiful, just like Sophie, and the commemorative and reverent tone of the minister’s voice was somehow upbeat.

He laced his fingers through hers, and she went with him when he laid the bouquet of flowers on the casket, gripping her hand even tighter.

He seemed almost at peace now. “I’m going to miss her,” he murmured.

Deidre kept giving him cold, calculating looks, and Vanessa, a stunning beauty, clutching the arm of an expensive looking man ignored Nate like he didn’t exist. Shallow didn’t really define her enough. Pru told herself she wouldn’t say a word, but it seemed as if the women were more interested in just getting the ceremony over with. “I’m so, so glad she knew you, Nate. That you cared about her, her life, and her wishes. I admire what you did.”

When Deidre started toward him, Pru cut her off and said fiercely, “Back off. You should be ashamed of yourself and what you wanted to do to those dogs your grandmother loved. It’s unbelievably cruel. I swear I have no problem taking you down right here.”

Deidre’s eyes widened, and she cut Nate another venomous look, then she stomped off toward the limo, Vanessa and her new sugar daddy trailing behind.

Nate steadied Pru when she tripped over some rough ground in her high heels, then he was hugging her so hard, she couldn’t draw breath. “Easy there, tiger,” he murmured and she pressed her face into the crook of his neck and just breathed slowly to release some of her anger and disgust.

Later that day, Nate was with her when she presented the proposal to the planning committee, and the group members were over the moon. After just a few tweaks, they approved the renovation plan. The signup sheet filled up with volunteers, and the date was set for the cleanup of the land. It was finally coming together.

Nate took her by AlphaGroup and gave her the check, which she deposited, and he made an appointment for them with the contractor for the day after they returned from the Hamptons.

Pru had already handed over the following week’s appointments to her assistant, and rescheduled the clients who requested to meet with her specifically.
